Print/Surface + Cut/Pattern
Collaboration with The Hive Printing

This series of prints came to be because of my desire to explore the interaction of the printed surface with cut patterns for my upcoming solo show, Patterns of Influence, at the Craft Council of BC (May 20th to July 1st, 2021). Norbert Mantik and Rebekah McGurran of The Hive Printing became my collaborators in August 2019, and from there we figured out how to develop this idea further. The use of colour and style were discussed as a team and the exact design of the prints was left up to Norbert to finalize. The Hive provided me with two original custom-designed prints with five copies of each.

My approach with these prints has been to experiment through iterations rather than creating a matching set of paper-cut prints. The cuts are intended to be additive and enhance the design of the prints even as cutting away subtracts material from the surface. The methodology and ideas evolved over time with meetings at different intervals with Norbert and Rebekah to check in and review how the project was progressing. The feedback from The Hive Printing was invaluable, along with their knowledge and skill as printmakers.

For the purposes of my paper cutting needs, these prints were made with Canson Mi-Teintes paper, and each one is 25.5 x 19.5 inches with a white border (not pictured here). The print series is available for purchase in my shop.
